A destination that weaves together natural splendor, rich history, and breathtaking coastal beauty, making it an unforgettable experience. Dubrovnik boasts a stunning backdrop of azure waters and rugged cliffs, creating a captivating contrast against its historic architecture.

The city is renowned for its magnificent city walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which offers visitors a glimpse into the city’s storied past. As you explore the cobblestone streets and alleys of the Old Town, you’ll be transported back in time, surrounded by medieval buildings, charming cafes and shops, and vibrant cultural scenes.

Dubrovnik’s coastal view is nothing short of spectacular. Its panoramic vistas of the Adriatic Sea and its inviting islands provide a picture-perfect setting exploration. Whether you’re walking along the ancient walls, sipping local wine at a seaside café, or taking a boat ride to the nearby islands, the coastal beauty is a constant companion.

Below you’ll find helpful tips and recommendations for where to stay, what to do and where to eat.

HELPFUL CROATIA TRAVEL TIPS

I recommend you learn as much as you can about the city prior to arriving. Visit your city’s book stores and libraries, or search online for helpful books and articles to obtain insight as to the culture, currency, history, famous sights, etc.

What I personally did for this particular trip:

  1. Read Rick Steve’s Croatia book before going. I highlighted the places I wanted to visit the most to make it easy for me to quickly identify these when opening the book in Dubrovnik. And yes, I brought the book with me on our trip, as I love having an easy access reference guide when touring around.
  2. Read forums or blog posts on Dubrovnik travel for unique insights and travel pointers. This tactic can give you great ideas of things to do that you normally wouldn’t find in travel books. People love to share their own personal travel adventures online, and a lot of readers will jump in and add their own experiences in the comments section, too; not only is it fun to read, but you can get a better idea of what to expect and also set realistic expectations for yourself. I have personally found lots of “gold” in forums.

Something important to mention about Dubrovnik: culture shock!

Croatian culture is characterized by a reserved and slightly more formal demeanor, often appearing colder or less overtly friendly. While Croatians are known for their hospitality and warmth once you break through their initial reserve, it’s common not to receive the same level of immediate warmth or frequent smiles that may be expected in some other countries. This reserved nature can be attributed to a strong sense of privacy and respect for personal boundaries…which might be even more pronounced now, due to the large waves of visitors that Croatians are experiencing during the high season (Summer) with the popularity of Games of Thrones (many episodes of the series were filmed in Croatia).

HOTEL

We stayed at the loveliest hotel a few steps away from Old Town: The Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik.

The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and modern. We went with two queens versus the one king, since I find that we sleep a lot more soundly when we each have our beds while traveling. The in-room amenities were great too: designer toiletries, slippers, cozy bath robes, free waters and a kettle for coffee or tea. The room had great blackout shades, which is imperative for a good night’s sleep.

The gym was wonderful. Found near the spa in the basement, it had cardio machines, free weights, various weight machines, cable machines and benches. It got a bit hot in the gym though, as the A.C. was not the strongest; I do find this to be a theme in most European hotel gyms.

The bar area was great! It felt fancy and spacious, and the food was delicious. It was so good, that we had lunch there three times. A great escape from the busy and bustling Old Town.

The entire staff was fantastic. From the front desk, to the restaurant servers, to the cleaning crew. They were top notch. All in all, the Hilton Imperial was one of our favorite hotel stays during our four-city 2023 Europe trip.

SIGHTS

There is much to explore in Dubrovnik and there is something for everyone there. We were active, taking full advantage of our day, but also giving ourselves some relaxation and time to re-group at the hotel. Below you’ll find our recommended activities in Old Town Dubrovnik for couples that want a good relaxation and exploration mix.

1. Walls of Dubrovnik

The walls of Dubrovnik are a captivating testament to the city’s rich history and resilience. These walls once shielded Dubrovnik from invaders and pirates, standing as a formidable defense. Today, they stand as a living monument to the city’s enduring spirit, inviting visitors to walk in the footsteps of history while enjoying breathtaking vistas that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a real-life Game of Thrones episode.

2. Old Town

Old Town Dubrovnik is a mesmerizing labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets and hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. It’s like stepping into a time machine and finding yourself in a charming medieval city filled with vibrant energy. As you wander through the bustling squares and alleys, you’ll stumble upon cozy cafes, bustling markets, and historic buildings that seem to whisper tales of bygone eras. 3. Farm to Table Cooking Class

Joining a Croatian cooking class is like embarking on a culinary adventure with newfound friends from around the globe. Picture yourself in a charming rustic patio, apron on, and a local chef as your guide, sharing secrets of traditional recipes passed down through generations. As you chop, stir, and sizzle, you’re not just learning to cook; you’re forming connections with fellow travelers over a shared love for food and culture. What sets this experience apart is the freshness of ingredients plucked straight from the garden, infusing each dish with the vibrant flavors of Croatia. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the stories, laughter, and memories you create together in the heart of this beautiful country. Our experience was hosted by Mikki’s Croatian Kitchen.

Imagine a magical evening in Old Town Dubrovnik, where a small movie theater under the starry sky brings cinematic dreams to life. It’s an enchanting experience, with a giant screen set against the backdrop of historic architecture. 3. Dubravka 1836 (Lunch or Dinner)

Dubravka 1836 is located right before entering Old Town Dubrovnik, right by the water’s edge. The view is fantastic, the service is quick and attentive, and the food is very fresh and delicious! I loved this spot. There might be a wait, but it’s well worth it. Their grilled white fish with grilled vegetables and potatoes was my favorite.

4. The Imperial Lounge and Bar (Lunch)

The Imperial Lounge and Bar was our hotel’s bar area where we grabbed lunch two or three times. It was a classy and quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Old Town, and our own little private sanctuary with great service and yummy food. We got the salads and were highly satisfied.
